?ĮDIT: No more PIA in the Software Center, Google here we come. How hard is it to remember two words in order to connect. My wife hates using the terminal but even she had absolutely no problem with it. But again, without a GUI Express VPN is ridiculously easy & fast to use. At least we can't tell if it does anything and the icon is not working/visible on the desktop. But downloading and following the PIA / Linux instructions from the PIA site provided us with a non-functional icon under START -> INTERNET. Mint has PIA in the software center, don't know if that makes a difference or not. Problem with PIA is that the darn icon won't work for us. PIA was about as fast as Express VPN, so they're a great choice with a GUI function. However, that's changed now and they have a lot more payment options available. We didn't like that, so we switched to Express VPN. We had PIA in the past but back then renewals were only possible with a subscription and valid debit/credit card for PIA to renew automatically. Maybe I misstated the VPN for my router part. "Private Internet Access" (PIA) and Linux Mint have their application in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), ProtonVPN has an excellent console terminal menu app, "vpn.ac" has a Linux GUI, etc. There are VPN providers that do have Linux desktop GUI applications and or really nice easy to use console terminal menus for selecting and connecting to their VPN servers with other options as well like a "killswitch".

FYI: I have never had to update the Linux desktop firewall for using any VPN provider's servers. I do not know of any hardware router or VPN provider that has a GUI for all their VPN servers that would update your hardware router? Most hardware routers that support VPN's already have a GUI interface through your browser to import individual VPN server configuration files like openVPN.
